Day 49 – Geraldton

After travelling about 15,000km so far on our trip around Australia, it was time to get the Santa Fe serviced, so Brendan had it booked in bright and early in Geraldton. Only problem was the car dealer was 5km from our caravan park. Never mind Brendan needed the walk back!

It was such a lovely day, and the walk into town was along the beach for most of the way, so we all decided to walk back into town and visit a few places while we waited for the car.

The first stop off was to have a look at the Old Gaol, which is now opened up to the public and most of the cells are filled with arts and crafts of various types – carved banksia wood, jewellery, hand knitted products, etc. Then it was across the road to the Museum of WA where we enjoyed looking at the various gallery displays on convicts, wildlife, and the many shipwrecks of the area. They have a terrific display about the ship ‘Batavia’ that went down in the 1600s, with many of the relics on display such as silver coins, etc.
We also had a look in the old Railway Station which also houses galleries and shops. Then it was down to the newly developed waterfront for an ice cream, and let the kids run around on the playground for a while.

We then decided to take a drive about 100km east of Geraldton, through the rolling green farmlands to the small town of Mullewa. Mullewa is particularly known for its amazing displays of wildflowers – especially paper daisies and everlasting flowers. Once in the town we drove up to the Bushland Trail (about 2.5km in length), along a rough stone path, through the most amazing display of wildflowers. The whole area was carpeted in flowers of varying shades of pinks, whites, purples and yellows.

The town itself has some interesting old buildings too – a very old church and priestery and historic town walks.

Driving home again from Mullewa we stopped at another national park trail and saw different types of wildflowers, before heading back through the vast canola and wheat crops, back to Geraldton.
